Beyond Basketball w/ Steve Wojciechowski
Is innovation affecting basketball on and off the court?
In 1991, I interviewed for a job a Cree. As part of the interview, we played basketball at lunch. Not your typical interview; But really effective. I would later come to realize that you can learn a lot more about a person and their ability to be part of an innovative team on a basketball court, than you can asking questions in a conference room.
Success in basketball and innovation ultimately comes down to leadership. Bringing a group of individuals together to strive for something that many think is impossible, whose relationship on and off the court is critical to success, and who have to put team success above individual gains if they are to achieve their goals.
I was fortunate to recently speak to one of these leaders - Steve Wojciechowski, the head men’s basketball coach at Marquette University. We talk about how innovation is changing the game of basketball. It was also fascinating to learn about how he determines if someone has, or can be taught, the will to win and how he hopes to teach his players lessons that they can use outside the game of basketball.
